Student Spotlight: Quin @ Arizona State University
The Admittedly Team
Meet Quin, a senior at Arizona State University majoring in Criminal Justice. He previously attended Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego, California.
What factors were most important when deciding which college to attend?**
The strength of the criminal justice program, having a campus that wasn't too huge or too small and being far enough away from home where I felt like I was actually independent while being close enough where I could come back during breaks.
In high school, I wish I would have tried...
Spending a little less time at my job and spending more time exploring my hometown, or doing fun things with my friends before we all went off to college.
How would you characterize your school?
Mainstream, Party, Outdoorsy, and Sporty.
What types of clubs, activities, sports, jobs, etc. are you involved with on campus?
Student recruitment for the honors college, Leadership, and Service Team for the downtown campus, and intramural sports.
Three things you won't read in your school's brochure:
- The fact that you can use M&G to order Domino's is a lifesaver.
- Jaywalking is apparently taken very seriously by ASU PD.
- It's way easier to make friends out here than you'd think. Floor events and on-campus events will help you familiarize with a lot of people, and I often run into other students from different campuses when I go to out to Phoenix and Tempe. Plus, it's easy to see your friends at different campuses thanks to the university's shuttle buses and the city's light rail system!
Best on-campus event:
Anything leading up to or related to game day.
Human Event. It's a two-semester class run by the honors college where you start at the beginning of written history and read different books, poems, and other texts up to present day. I'm not a reader at all, but it's the most thought-provoking and engaging class I've taken at ASU. The discussions are all run by the students and there's no "right" way to interpret the text. The professor is mainly there to make sure that there's some sort of discussion going on.
Favorite Dining Hall Meal:
Hash browns, waffles, coffee, and Lucky Charms at 1 PM on a Saturday (Yeah, they serve breakfast that late on the weekends. They know how we are).
On weekends, students:
Sleep, party, do homework, take day trips to Sedona, go to concerts, go shopping, and try out different restaurants or coffee shops.
It's 1AM on Saturday. Where are you?
Sleeping in my bed, playing PlayStation, or at a late-night coffee shop.
It's finals week and the libraries are packed. Where do you go study?
My apartment or any of the local coffee shops around campus.
Before I graduate, I want to...
See ASU football beat USC again.
Anything else awesome that we should know about your college?
The fact that ASU is so expansive means that there's something for everybody here! With all the different ways you can get involved off-campus and on-campus, it's easy to find something you like and start connecting with people through that. College itself is really what you make of it, and ASU makes it easy to explore your interests or develop new ones.
