Meet Jonathan, a sophomore Chemical Engineering major at The Cooper Union in New York City, NY. He previously attended Port Chester High School in Rye Brook, New York.

What factors were most important when you decided to go to your school?

The vibe of the campus/peers was a very important when I decided to go to Cooper Union. After attending admitted students day, listening to the stories of the faculty and current students made me realize that Cooper Union is a very unified institution that is not only academically challenging, but also very fun.

In high school, I wish I could have...

...learned how to do everything that Cooper Union expects me to do.

How would you characterize your school?

Hipster, Nerdy, and Liberal.

How would you characterize your group of friends?

Geographically diverse.

What types of clubs, activities, sports, jobs, etc are you involved with on campus?

-American Institute of Chemical Engineers. It's a professional society where fellow chemical engineers meet and attend different events around the NYC area to get a better idea of what chemical engineers do.

-I am also in Martial Arts Club.

-Chem-E Car is a club where a car is built from scratch that uses chemical reactions to start and stop. Not only limited to chemical engineers; Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship; Ballroom Dance; Origami Club.

Three things you won't read in your school's brochure
  1. There's a lot of political unrest.

  2. There's no actual campus, so the city is your campus, which gives you a lot of opportunities to explore.

  3. Cooper is VERY small and you usually only interact with people from your school (either art, engineering, or architecture).

Best on-campus event:

Culture Show is an event run by the South Asian Society (SAS) where clubs such as Ballroom Dance, Chinese YoYo, SAS, CooperNova (dance team), CooperTones (acappella group), and more perform cultural pieces in the Great Hall.

Favorite class:

Physical Chemistry.

Favorite place to eat out around campus:

Ramen Misoya.

It’s 3am on a Saturday. Where are you?

Sleeping, studying, or out exploring the city.

It’s finals week and the libraries are packed. Where do you go to study?

NYU Bobst Library (if it's not packed), NAB classrooms (New Academic Building - 41 Cooper Square).

Before I graduate, I want to…

Enjoy college for what it is.
